In the hopes that my limited experience will help someone else in the research stages, here is a quick list of pros and cons for the ipad mini. Keep in mind that my experience is limited to just a few months. So, feel free to agree or disagree in the comments!
1. Touchscreen keyboard
Despite the ability to split the touchscreen keyboard and type with my thumbs, I still find it awkward and time-consuming. Beyond extremely short messages, I usually end up switching to my laptop for heavy typing.
2. Calendar issues
A feature of the calendar is a drop-down menu on your home screen. This would be extremely convenient, if it worked correctly. The issue is that it will only show events in which you've scheduled a specific time slot. If you're used to scheduling events for the whole day, because you're too lazy or busy to specify a time (like me), it only says, "There is one all-day event scheduled." Not very helpful. On my list of disappointments, this was at the top.
On rare occasions, the four-fingered pinching function doesn't work. While this wouldn't have been a deal-breaker for me, it's still a glitch that needs to be fixed.
1. It's small
I wanted a tablet that could fit into my purse, and this does so nicely. I don't need a separate carrying case, and it's one less thing I have to worry about grabbing while I'm heading out the door every morning.
2. Apps for organization
There are just so many apps available, and I've only begun to scratch the surface. However, the ones I've been using on a daily basis are: idoceo, 2Do, Bloglovin, and iBooks. Along with browsing the internet, I could be satisfied using only these apps (in addition to the garden-variety social media apps).
I use a Mac at school and a Macbook Pro at home, so there was very little to learn about the ipad mini that I didn't already know. As with most technology these days, I was able to figure out almost everything else through experimentation. Of course, I still researched tips and tricks for those things I wouldn't have discovered otherwise. For example, how to take a screenshot (press the home and on/off button at the same time).
And that's the extent of what I know so far! If you're just starting your research into purchasing a tablet, or if you're looking at a different gadget, I would suggest checking out MKBHD on Youtube. My husband and I watch his videos even when we're not in the market to purchase anything new. Below is the video I watched while deciding between the Nexus 7 and ipad mini.
Don't forget to leave a message in the comments if you have something to add to my list of pros and cons!
