YELLOW BRICK ROAD MUSIC

Today’s free resource is all about vocal exploration. If you’ve used vocal exploration in your classroom, you already know its benefits. Vocal exploration allows students a chance to discover their singing voice, create high/low sounds, and compose simple pieces using squiggly lines and curves. You can read more ideas for vocal exploration in this post, where I detail why it’s important and all the different ways you can try it out in your own classroom.

Each of the images below is a screenshot from my interactive PowerPoint titled Catch the Dragon. I recently posted this as a free resource in my store, and I think it would be perfect for your younger students.

Students will click on one of the dragons in the main menu. Then, they have to “follow his flight path” by singing.

After singing, they tap the tail and learn the dragon’s name and special ability.

Students click “meet another dragon” to continue with more vocal explorations. You can download this entire vocal exploration game for free HERE.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY

Once your students have met all the dragons, you can finish up the lesson with a simple composition activity. Give students a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw and color the tail of a dragon on the right side of the paper (project one of the vocal exploration images as an example). Then, tell them to create their own flight path for the dragon and sing it when they’re finished. Plus, it would be a great project to display during Open House Night.
How do you plan to use this free game in your classroom? How do you typically use vocal exploration in your classroom? Please share your ideas in the comments section. I’d love to hear how vocal exploration works in your classroom!
