YELLOW BRICK ROAD MUSIC

Be the change. These words might make you think of Mahatma Gandhi. The full quotation “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” is erroneously attributed to him in almost every corner of the internet. Nevertheless, “be the change” inspires self-reflection. It reminds us that we can only change the world by first changing ourselves.

In this way, music is a great healer. It can unify the hearts of the most staunch enemies with a crowd singing in unison. Music connects people of all backgrounds to make music in orchestras, bands, and choirs. All who sing, play an instrument, or tap to the beat are privy to the transformational power of music.

As you make music with your students this week, I hope you think of those three, powerful words. I hope you recognize that you are a maker of positive change in this world.

With these thoughts in mind, I leave you with the actual quote from  Mahatma Gandhi:

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.”
